Abstract

The secondary metabolites are natural compounds that are produced by plants that have as main objective protect plants from biotic and abiotic stresses, besides great nutritional values and pharmacological for human diet and aromatic and dye propreties. These compounds are separetes in three major grups: terpenes, phenolic compounds and nitrogen containing compounds. The major groups are divided in subgroups that have biosynthesis, function and especific importance. The discovery and studies of this compounds are recent. Because it’s a huge group of substances these compounds it’s necessery studies to elucidate the role of these substances in plants and the function in plant/human interaction for better harnessing. This review will approach general aspects about the importance, biosynthesis and function in biotic and abiotic stresses of secondary metabolites.
