Abstract

The presence of weeds interferes directly and indirectly on the productive potential of corn due to competition for water, light, nutrients and the synthesis of allelopathic compounds with phytotoxic effect. Therefore, the objective of this work was to evaluate the allelopathic effect of two weed extract on the initial development of corn seedlings. A completely randomized design in a 2 x 5 factorial scheme was used, with two weed extracts, bittergrass and trapoeraba, in five concentrations (0, 25, 50, 75 and 100%) of the studied extract, with four replications. To evaluate the initial development of corn seedlings, a test was performed in the laboratory and another in a greenhouse. The evaluated parameters were germination, germination speed index, seedling emergence in sand, seedling emergence speed index, length and dry mass of the area and root part of corn seedlings. Seedling development was inhibited in the presence of the extracts of trapoeraba and bittergrass as concentrations increased.
