Abstract

Cultivated more than 25 years ago, transgenic, also called GMOs, have conquered farmers around the world and have come to dominate soybean, corn and cotton crops, with expansion in several countries and new technologies. Thus, modern agriculture is linked to the use of GMOs, which increasingly strengthens the market and boosts the economy, including the national one. Knowledge about this technology is of great interest to the scientific and academic community, so information since release, laws, which cultivars are on the market, which technologies are already available, and what use has brought advantages and uncertainties, will be in part clarified in this review. Thus, it aims to elucidate about GMOs and their current situation, especially about their adoption in different countries, benefits, and issues related to social, environmental and food safety, in addition to the latest Brazilian approvals, linking their importance for agriculture and what to expect for the next years.
