FOUCAULT EM NEWGATE: DISCIPLINA E LITERATURA NO ESTADO MODERNO INGLÊS

RESUMO
O objetivo deste trabalho é relacionar os mecanismos de poder disciplinar característicos do Estado moderno europeu à produção literária na Inglaterra dos séculos XVIII e XIX, observando a série de transformações no corpo político inglês que acompanha a transição da hegemonia capitalista comercial para a industrial, assim como os gêneros literários que se constituem ao longo deste processo histórico – neste caso, os Newgate calendars, no século XVIII; e a literatura policial, na cidade industrial do século seguinte.
ABSTRACT
The objective of this paper is to relate the disciplinary mechanisms of power that are characteristic to the European modern State to the literary production of the 18th and 19th centuries, observing the series of transformations that follow the transition from commercial to industrial capitalist hegemony, as well as the literary genres that are produced during this historical process – in this case, the Newgate calendars, in the 18th century; and the detective literature in the industrial city of the following century.
